The City Centre shopping precinct is nestled on the Hunter River and amongst the magnificence of its beautiful historic buildings dating back to the early 1800s. The open air Maitland Heritage Mall in High Street is the heart of the CBD and the centrepiece for events and promotional activities.
On of the features of the Maitland City shopping precinct has been the attraction of many independently-owned businesses including boutiques with their unique brands and personal service, as well as specialist gift and jewellery shops supported by a range of antiques and lifestyle outlets. Over recent months, a number of enterpreneurial operators have recognised the opportunity to open a business in this unqiue shopping precinct.
Maitland City Centre boasts in excess of 500 businesses amongst this bustling professional and retail business precinct, which is very diverse, featuring an extensive range of independent retailers, medical facilities, and a very strong financial centre including all major Australian Banks. FESTIVALS
The image changing process of Maitland CBD has been showcased with the introduction of two new Festival for the City Centre this year; "The Maitland Taste" Food, Wine & Jazz Festival held the last weekend of March each year where celebrity chefs, wine master classes and horse and carriage tours are features of this event. "The Maitland Aroma" Coffee, Chocolate and Fine Food Festival is held in the middle of August each year and features fabulous blues and jazz music together with outstanding entertainment, as well as guided history walking tours.
Both of these inaugural events held in the Maitland Heritage Mall attracted huge crowds and proved a great boom to local retail businesses and will now become annual events. Maitland is also the known hosts of the long established annual Steamfest Festival centred around the magnificent heritage Maitland railway station, which is located on the main Sydney Brisbane rail link.

The Culture and Heritage Quarter
The recently re-opened Maitland Regional Art Gallery in the cultural Quarter of Maitland CBD is a particular feature of the CBD and complements the nearby Repertory Theatre which has regular live productions.
Regular Guided History Walks, by the local Historical Society, in Matialnd CBD prove an insight into the significant historic elements of Maitland CBD.

Location
Maitland is about 30 minutes drive from Newcastle and two hours drive from the northern part of Sydney via the F3 on the main north/south rail line. It is located on the New England Highway which is on the inland route from Sydney to Brisbane.
